Water Towers (2024-2026)
I can't help looking up. There's always another water tower. Or two. Or three.
Years ago, when I was making Funnels, which in part was about transition, water towers seemed too much like a closed system. I perceive them differently now. I'm attracted to their stability and their life sustaining purpose. And of course, I love the shapes. They resonate with my interest in male/female dichotomies.
New York City is a city of change, but the water towers provide continuity. In terms of infrastructure, they are the foundation in the sky. Sentinels of the city. Anchored and grounded but also vertically aspirational.
In the landscape of New York City, they seem to have always been here, and the hope is that they always will be. I suppose they offer that illusion for me - that I'll always be here. But in fact, they only last a generation. And like me, they're mostly water.
